What is social stratification: ranking of people based on their social class, race, and gender e. g Why are complex human societies stratified: society distributed material and social rewards to individuals. Society allocated its limited resources to individuals who do more, received more wealth and social recognition. Meritocracy: individuals must believe this and achieved wealth and status for the system to work, second principle system is stable, stratification transcends through generations. Social mobility measure by intergenerational and intragenerational mobility. Very few people are able to move out of the social class in which they were born: third principle-present in all culture but varies through cultures. Example some cultures status is granted not so much in what you have but how much you give: acceptance of unjust criteria grounded in the dominant ideology. What is social inequality: unfair, and hidden behind ideologies, collective decisions about what is important in evaluating a person/group, ranks people on subjective criteria gender, minority status,
