Document Summary

Chapter 2 notes protein composition and structure. Key properies enable proteins to paricipate in a wide range of funcions: proteins are linear polymers built of monomer units called amino acids which are linked end to end. Proteins spontaneously fold up into three-dimensional structures determined by their amino acid sequence. 3d structure formed by hydrogen bonds is called the secondary structure. Teriary structure is formed by long range interacions between amino acids. Quaternary structure - composed of several disinct polypepide chains: proteins contain a wide range of funcional groups. Alcohols, thiols, thioethers, carboxylic acids, carboxamides, and a variety of basic groups: proteins can interact with one another and with other biological macromolecules to form complex assemblies. The proteins within these assemblies can act synergisically to generate capabiliies that individual proteins may lack. Macromolecule machines that replicate dna : some proteins are quite rigid, whereas others display considerable lexibility.
