Document Summary

Insomnia: a disorder characterized by an extreme lack of sleep. Onset insomnia: difficulty falling asleep (30+ min) Maintenance insomnia: difficulty returning to sleep after waking in the night. Terminal insomnia: waking up too early and can"t return to sleep. It can be a result of mental illness, drugs for which it would be classified as secondary insomnia. If the insomnia doesn"t have a cause or is the only affliction affecting the patient, it is insomnia disorder. Nightmares: vivid and disturbing dreams that occur during rem sleep. These dreams can provoke the individual to be awoken. They are correlated with psychological distress (anxiety, negative emotionality etc). A theory for nightmares is that our brain is trying to reduce our emotional responses to negative thoughts and experiences by recollecting those experiences and mixing in random images & memories. However during nightmares the process is butchered and leads to the opposite reaction.
