POLI 318 Chapter Notes - Chapter Jane Jacobs reading (1): Knitting, Simple Minds, Statistical Mechanics
Document Summary
Jane jacobs: the kind of problem a city is. Focus: to gear an appreciation of the organized complexity we live in today and the challenge we face in making sense of various aspects. What that means is that causal analysis is much more difficult to understand: too many moving parts. Hence the importance of being aware of the complex systems and emergent properties. But all this does not mean we should give up. Need to know what kind of problems cities pose, because not all problems can be thought about in the same way. The deepest revolutionary changes have to do with the mental methods we can use for probing the world meaning methods of analysis and discovery that have gotten into human brains: new strategies for thinking. To understand the changes in strategies of thought in cities, it is necessary to understand a little about the history of scientific thought.
