Unlike reliability and validity analyses that evaluate the measurements characterisics of a test as a whole, item analysis procedures examine individual items separately, not the overall test. Helps to decide which item to keep on a test. The reliability and validity of test scores are depending on the quality of the items on the test. if you can improve the quality of the individual items, you will improve the overall quality of your test. Qualitaive procedures: evaluaions of validity evidence based on the content of the test & examinaion of individual items to ensure that they are technically accurate. Qualitaive procedures have not received much atenion but it is good to use a combinaion of qualitaive and quanitaive. Items that are score dichotomously (right/ wrong) are handled diferently than items on a coninuum. Tests that are designed to maximize variability are handled diferently than mastery tests.
