I(cid:374) the way they act and treat others, the women assign themselves and each other to classes: class categorization, constant negotiation for a place in the stratification system with no clear ranking emerging. It is in micro situations that the consequences of class are felt in our dail(cid:455) li(cid:448)es. In the coffee shop, different orientations toward work were continually acted out: the working class w worked and talked about work. In addition to acting out their work ethic, the working-class w talked about how lazy others are: at the same time, the other w in the coffee shop treated the working-class w as inferior based on these values. The w (cid:272)ould ha(cid:448)e just done diff jobs and work outside of their time at the coffee shop, but that would not necessarily translate into categorization into particular social classes.
