Cross talk in movements: reconceiving the culture-network link (mische) Ideas are about social movements are negotiated through social interactions: social interaction negotiations: conversations, speeches, statements, etc. i. These socialized networks build mechanisms to help explain how ties are constructed and sustained. Language strategies are used to communicate ideas that the social movement is trying to convey: there are 3 conversational mechanisms i. ii. They all represent means by which actors try to understand their memberships, identity, and projects in order to build relations with other actors. These socialized networks build mechanisms to help explain how ties are constructed and sustained: compartmentalizing talk. Mische argues that conflicts between roles can be managed by narrowing the scope of a statement. Temporal cueing : actions and plans are put into a narrower context, with the goal of highlighting potential compatibilities. Ex: focusing on short-term goals, instead of highlighting differences that people might have in regards to long-term goals: conflation talk.
