Non-reactive research or methods of studying social behaviour without affecting it. There are three types of non-reactive research: existing statistics, content analysis and historical and comparative research. The durkheim study is an example of the analysis of existing statistics. There are great masses of data around you. There is a large number of high quality survey data sets available for secondary analysis. In content analysis researchers examine a class of social artifacts that are usually written documents such as newspaper editorials. Historical and comparative research is a form of research with a venerable history in the social sciences. For many people it is a qualitative method where the main resources for observation and analysis are historical records. There is the use of the word comparative because sociologists want to discover common patterns that recur in different times and places. In 1966 eugene webb and three colleagues publish a book on social research: unobtrusive measures.
