Document Summary

10 trillion cells in an adult human. Eukaryotic cells: cells have a nucleus that contains most of the genetic material in a cell o. Prokaryotic cells: do not contain a true nucleus o o o. Provide essential functions throughout our physiologic systems: maintained by our immune system. Microbiome: a population of microorganisms or micro bacteria (organisms only visible under a microscope) Streptococcus salivarius: a normal inhabitant of the upper respiratory tract and oral cavity. Cell: membrane bound structure containing macro molecules. Membranes needs to separate their internal environment from the external - allows the distinct environments to have diff chemical compositions. Cell membrane is made up of lipid macromolecules: has hydrophobic/philic properties that allow stacked lipid bilayers to form. Phospholipids: amphipathic: hydrophilic surface (polar) and hydrophobic interior (nonpolar) o. These properties change the shape, size and behaviour of the phospholipids and ultimately the membranes. Phospholipids spontaneously adopt unique membrane structures due to their amhipathic nature.
