Two meanings of the term respiraion : external respiraion (oxygen transport, gas exchange, movement of o2 from environment to cell (mitochondria) and movement of co2 in. 2. opposite direcion: chapters 16 and 17. Internal respiraion (oxygen uilizaion: cellular respiraion, metabolic processes within cells, chapter 3 metabolism. The sequenial series of steps" involved in moving oxygen from the environment to mitochondria in cells. Co2 moves along the same pathway, but in the opposite direcion. Following lectures will focus on importance of venilaion, pulmonary difusion and blood gas transport for gas exchange and acid-base homeostasis. Composed of a series of issues many important for moving gas from the environment into our lungs. Conducing zone (upper airways + respiratory tract) no gas exchange between air and blood here just conducing pathways. End of the conducing zone progressive branching network of tubes where gas exchange occurs (respiratory zone) Conducing zone: reinforced with carilage and smooth muscle: undergoes progressive branching into smaller tubes.
