Modernity is generally understood to refer to the social, economic, political and technological developments that have characterized the transition from traditional (premodern) to advanced (modern) civilizations. The characteristics of modernity in any given culture/society are contested,refer to chart to see many different characteristics that are viewed as modern. History of modernity is contested too sometimes aligned to 18th century century of enlightenment age of reason spread of western imperialism in the 16th century also goes as far back as 4th century. For purpose of media theory, modernity emerged around the 2nd half of the 15th century (when the printing press was invented) 20th century globalization of modern life coupled w/rise of modernism. For media theory, rapid development of mass media technologies is the most pressing aspect of modernity. this perspective assumes technology to be a powerful and mostly positive force for social change. Any medium of communication will be biased towards its utility either across time or space.
