Chapter 16: content analysis: content analysis is likely to revolve around the 5w"s that are the basis of any news report, who, what, where, why, and when. What things need to be counted: depends on the specific research questions. Value positions: further level of interpretation when the researcher is seeking to demonstrate that the writer of a particular text has taken a certain value position, also seen in the coding of ideologies, beliefs, and principles. Coding: two main elements to a content analysis coding scheme: coding schedule and a coding manual, content analysts are normally interested in a much larger number of variables. Coding schedule: form onto which the data are entered, dimension to be coded are separated in columns, blank cells are provided for codes to be written. Involves a search for underlying themes: ethnographic content analysis involves constant revision of themes and categories distilled from the examination of documents.
