*view that a relationship"s development reflects the unfolding of social exchanges; that is, the rewards and costs of maintaining the relationship, as opposed to those of ending it. Follows initial attraction, caused by similar interests, physical attractiveness. Caring and positive evaluation (presents, say thanks, acknowledgement) Perceiving fairness in relationship (both give and receive effort) Irrational to think that good relationships require no time and effort. Can react actively (try to fix it) or passively (sit back and hope it fixes itself) Problems with communication and jealousy are main issues. Money, unemployment, substance abuse, infidelity, low religiosity, premarital pregnancy, low rewards/high cost, inequity. Emotional: being close with someone outside of relationship. Sexual: physical sexual acts with someone outside of relationship. Men can differentiate between sex and love, they go together for women. Gender differences disappear when partner has same sex affair (less upset when partner has homosexual affair) Conventional adultery: extramarital sex that is kept hidden from one"s spouse.
