Behling & schriesheim: categorized 4 major approaches to studying leadership, whether the theory deals with leadership traits or leadership behaviors. Leadership traits: relaively stable in nature, intelligence, aggressiveness, independence. Leadership behavior: observed behavior of the leaders and litle to do with personaliies. Traits found in all successful leaders are universal traits. Situaional traits and situaional behaviors are those that help make a leader in one situaion, but litle value in another. Study where random did beter than pledge class in a blindfolded maze: pledge group depended on president who had no experience vs. other group. Great leaders have personality traits and characterisics that make them ideally suited for leadership in any situaion. Personality traits ae stable, therefore possible to idenify leaders. Supported unil ater ww2, stogdill published new conclusions and discredit this theory. Believed that successful leaders had certain universal behaviors and could be taught to potenial leaders. Anyone could learn to be a successful leader by learning behavioral characterisics.
