Chapter 11: oppression is the message: media, sport, spectacle, and gender. Spectacle of accumulation dazzling dramatic images for entertainment that are produced. Spectacle of legitimation entertainment that intentionally or inadvertently makes certain (cid:498)giving the audience what they want(cid:499) discourses or attitudes seems normal and commonsensical (p. 213) Media producers of sport have often assumed that audiences are predominantly male and for this reason made production decisions with the male audience in mind. The decisions are made by people who have their own set of biases (p. 214) When viewers/readers encounter similar messages from an array of sources, the message comes increasingly more powerful. Content analysis techniques vs. semiotic analysis which, uses signs and sign systems (signifier and signified) (p. 216) Individuals will assign different meanings to signs depending on heir cultural experiences. Media sources tend to promote messages that reinforce dominant gender hierarchies.
