To aristocratic greeks being slender was for self-mastery and moderation. To middle age christians being slender was a symbol of spiritual purification. Rituals of fasting only for aristocratic or priestly who were deemed capable of such excellence of spirit. Body shape and size has two purposes: for designation of social position (class etc. , as an indicator of spiritual, moral, and emotional state. Unwanted bulges symbolize uncontained desires, unrestrained hunger, Body as alien the body is threatening to erupt from within. The ideal body is tight and controlled (bolted down, opposite of erupting) uncontrollable impulse erupting from within. Compulsive dieting vs. body building what are the similarities? nothing loose or wiggly. Both are in a battle against the soft/loose, excess flesh. Weight and bulk are okay as long as it is tightly managed. The more body one has the more uncultured and uncivilized one is expected to be (old school thinking that muscle equalled brute)
