Despite this association more men are entering the profession in record numbers and are challenging the stereotype that men are inappropriate in a caring role or incapable of providing compassion/sensitivity. A lot of men enter these professions specifically because they want to care for others. Once in the profession though, prevailing gender stereotypes of men being sexual aggressors or male nurses as being gay can negatively influence the ability of male nurses to develop a comfortable/trusting relationship with their patients. Can impact the ability of male nurses to perform the work they wanted to do. By discussing gender as though it pertains to women only this perpetuates a fallacy that men are not gendered.
