Mental grammar - knowing how to make sounds, how to create words and sentences, and what they mean, shared system between people"s minds that allow them to communicate. A shared system means that the method that people think is often very similar. Linguistics - science of human language, observing data empirically, descriptive approach to studying languages, included in the field of cognitive science. Empirical - means to observe data to find evidence for a theory. Articulatory system - lungs, larynx, tip of tongue, nose, lips, teeth, parts that produce speech. Cognitive science - things that happen in the mind, study of how language is organized in the mind. Phonetics - the study of physical properties of speech sounds and how humans produce them. Phonology - the organization of sounds of a language in the mind, the study of how languages use different sounds. Morphology - strategies or processes used to form words.
