Most vowels get reduced to [ ] in unstressed sylla(cid:271)les. Stress - stressed syllables are more prominent, as in longer, louder and higher in pitch, in english. Peak of sonority surrounded by less sonorous sounds. Syllables - sound segments combine to form syllables, and is the unit of pronunciation. Is proven by the fact that onsets are switched, rather than the segments. A dot is used to mark the boundary between syllables. Malapropisms - mischosen words usually have phonology similar to intended words and usually the same number of syllables. Phonotactics - branch of phonology concerned with permissible combinations of phonemes. Usually the vowel, syllabic liquid, or syllabic nasal, diphthongs, sonorant consonants. Combines with the nucleus to make the rhyme. Onset maximization, you should be able to begin an english word with the consonant or cluster in the onset optional. Syllable that is longer, louder, may be higher in pitch, transcribed with " at the beginning of stressed syllable.
