Document Summary

Segments making up words can be associated with two different types of representations: phonological representations. Consist of phonemes that contain information about contrasts. Corresponds to what is in the mind: phonetic representations. Made up of allophones, that contain a great deal of additional information about the details of pronunciation. Corresponds to what comes out of the mouth. General rules apply to phonological representations to derive the phonetic representation by filling in the various predictable phonetic details that contribute to a word"s actual pronunciation. Phonetic representations are derived by allowing rules to apply to the phonological representation: ex. Aspiration applies to the syllable-initial voiceless stops: ex. Vowel lengthening applies to the vowel and precedes a voiced obstruent in the same syllable. Phonetic representation reflects the addition of predictable phonetic details to a less specific mental representation of the word. Aspiration occurs in the onset and vowel lengthening occur in the pre-coda position.
