Week 2 online module: word categories: words grouped based on their behaviour, not meaning. Nouns have a singular/plural form can appear in a phrase following the word the. Verbs: most have a past tense form. Degree words precede adjectives/adverbs indicates how much if a word can be replace by very, probably a degree word. Conjunction only 3: and, or, but conjoin two phrases of the same category. Auxiliaries appear with verbs: non-modal auxiliaries, be (am/are/is/was/were/been) ; have (has/had) ; do (does/did/done, modal auxiliaries, never change their form because they are never inflected, appear with words, can/could ; shall/should ; will/would ; may/might/must. Qualifiers adverbs; appear before verbs: (ie: really enjoyed that movie/never learned to knit) Week 2 online module: syntactic category differences in the brain: words in a category behave similarly to other words in that category (not based on meaning)
