Procedure guideline for performing hand hygiene: push your wristwatch and long uniform sleeves above your wrists. Interlace your fingers and rub your palms, including around the thumb area and the back of your hands, with a circular motion at least five times each. Keep your fingertips pointed down to facilitate the removal of microorganisms: areas underlying the fingernails are often soiled. Turn off the water with a foot or knee pedal if applicable: apply lotion to your hands. Use the facility-provided lotion if one has been provided. Do not use lotion if you are going to be providing patient care immediately after washing.
