PNB 2XA3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Mental Rotation, Hemispatial Neglect, Visual Acuity
Document Summary
Galton (1883) asked his research participants to introspect and to report on their own mental contents. Some had very vivid images with rich detail while others had sketchy images or no images at all. All the participants could have seen an image but some may have been cautious in how they chose to describe their imagery, while others were more extravagant. Modern day: we ask participants to make a judgement about the image and measure their latencies. Data is generally chronometric and give us a much more accurate portrait of imagery than could ever be obtained with self- report. Figure 10. 1 fictional island used in image-scanning experiments. Participants in the study first memorized a map including various landmarks (the hut, the well, the patch of grass, and so on). They then formed a mental image of this map for the scanning procedure.
