Document Summary

Attitude followed by behaviour makes intuitive sense, but careful observation reveal that things can go the other way. Bem"s self-perception theory proposed that we don"t necessarily have a special insight into ourselves. We sometimes have to figure out who we are in a way that is similar to how we figure out who others are: by assessing behaviour. Strack, martin, & stepper told subject that they were participating in a study to determine how hard it is for people who aren"t using their hands or arms to accomplish certain tasks. They had subjects hold a pen in their mouth, holding it w/ either their teeth (which results in a smile) or in their lips (which results a frown) W/ pen in mouth, the subjects then gave a subjective rating for how funny a cartoon was. They weren"t asked to formulate an attitude or put themselves into any particular emotional state.
