PSYCH 1X03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Aids, Self-Perception Theory, Cognitive Dissonance
Document Summary
Harlow experiment: examined effects of social isolation on monkeys. Baby monkeys placed in total social isolation but, provided necessities for life, suffered extreme emotional disturbance. Babies who experienced isolation were neglectful or abusive to their infants. Women more often extend generous behaviour towards kin and friends; Men more often do so for strangers in public settings. Experiment looked at why (through an evolutionary lens) If we consider theories of costly signalling and sexual selection then maybe it"s because men"s generosity patters are shaped by the desire to attract mates. Costly signaling: suggests that certain traits (often detrimental/risky) have evolved to be obvious to others and provide information about their genetic quality. Costlier signal= more reliable of a mate quality indicator. Sexual selection: females tend to look for cues of commitment and resources in men. Thus, men may use generosity to demonstrate their overall quality.
