Document Summary
Clinicians use the four d"s to broadly define abnormality. What is considered normal or abnormal differs between people, cultures, and time periods, making it difficult to define what makes behaviour truly abnormal. Many clinicians use a fixed set of criteria to broadly define abnormality. Exhibiting one or more of these characteristics does not necessarily label someone as having a psychological disorder. Having thoughts, emotions and behaviours that fall far outside of the standards of what others are doing. Does not make sense to label the cultural practices of minority populations as psychological disorders, because these groups may not have anything wrong with them other than being different. Deviance includes both those who fall well below and well above the standard of the group-- Distress refers to negative feelings related to thoughts and behaviour. Common characteristic of psychological abnormality is a feeling of distress.
