PSYCH 1XX3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Sodium Channel, Myelin, Neuroglia
Document Summary
Intro to the neural control of behaviour: brain is made up of 100 billion neurons, each neuron can have between 1. 10000 connections: how the biological brain produces the mental processes of the mind. The neuron: neurons are specialized for communication, 2 distinct zones. Receptive zone: receive signals from other neurons. Made up of the dendrites branching out from the cell body. Dendrites reach out to other neurons and receive signals to be relayed through the dendritic branch to the cell body. Some signals will be conveyed down the axon. Transmission zone: pass on signals to other cells. Made up of the axon (long fiber) and terminal ends/boutons. Terminal boutons reach out and make connections with other near by neurons to continue transmitting the signal: glial cells: found through neuron systems providing structural support, nourishment, and insulation to neurons. Glial cells and neurons work together in baths of ions, chemicals, and blood vasculature to make up the brain.
