PSYCH 2AP3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Therapeutic Relationship, Animal Magnetism, Treatment As Prevention
Document Summary
Psychological disorder: a psychological dysfunction within an individual that is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected. Phobia: a psychological disorder characterized by persistent fear of an object or situation. Many people have experienced a mild version of this reaction without meeting the criteria for the disorder. Knowing where to draw the line between normal and abnormal is often difficult. Just having a dysfunction is not enough to meet the criteria for a psychological disorder. By itself it does doesn"t not define abnormal behavior. Many people are shy or lazy but it does not mean they"re abnormal: but if ur shy that u cannot date people and avoid human interaction but would like to make friends, then ur social functioning is impaired. Jody was impaired by his phobia but many people with similar, less severe reactions are not.
