Egotistical suicide: suicides in europe are low in catholic countries (spain, portugal, italy) and high in protestant countries (prussia, saxony, denmark, the tendency toward suicide among protestants must be related to the spirit of free inquiry that informs that religion, protestantism gives a greater place to individual thought than catholicism, this is because it involves fewer common beliefs and practices, a religious society does not exist without a collective credo , religious societies are socialized by attaching all to a single body of doctrine and to the extent to which this body is wider and more solidly constructed, the greater the area of inquiry that a religious group abandons to the judgment of individuals, the more it will be absent from their lives, and the less cohesion and vitality it will possess, protestantism"s numerical superiority in suicide derives from the fact that it is a less firmly integrated church than the catholic one.
