Document Summary

Research, is a systematic approach to gathering data using an agreed-upon set of methods that social scientists have developed over the years. The data that we gather helps us as researchers to understand and describe the world. The kinds of research questions you ask will always depend on the theoretical perspective from which you are working; different theoretical perspectives will lead you to ask different research questions. Conflict theorists, on the other hand, are concerned with the struggle over scarce resources by different groups in society and how elites control the less powerful. Therefore, a conflict theorist may be interested in how families cope with current economic strains. Researchers working from this perspective may be interested in examining government and corporate policies that disadvantage families by privatizing or withdrawing particular social supports. Both functionalist and conflict perspectives are considered to be macrosociological theories and therefore ask large questions.
