SOCIOL 4UU3 Chapter Notes - Chapter week 9: Sexual Sterilization Act Of Alberta, Structural Functionalism
Document Summary
Week 9 summary - disability, sexuality, and newgenics (03/05/19) The first article by esther ignagni, ann fudge schormans, kirsty liddiard and katherine. Runswick-cole introduced the concept of intimate citizenship as the rights individuals have to make their own decisions on whom, how, and when they want to engage in intimate relations. The papers focus is exploring the ways in which there are existing barriers of intimate citizenship as a right for the lives of labelled people. The authors explained their findings through the concepts of love, work, and consumption. First, labelled people are often policed in the ways they are and are not allowed to love - the kinds of friendships, romantic relationships and childbearing can often be discouraged or forcibly removed by caretakers and family. Second, labelled people are often restricted by the rhetoric of being people who need to be cared for instead of being people who care for others - thus preventing them from paid work opportunities.
