This week"s readings focus on the intersections of age, ethnicity, gender, and even class when it comes to youth"s sexuality. Espiritu study interviews filipino families of san diego, california, to examine how they counter the cultural americanization and assimilation of philippines through the vehicle of gender and sex. Espiritu is clearly using an intersectional lens to combine ethnicity and gender to sexuality and morality (predominantly catholic values of sex). Moreover, it was really interesting to read this paper that reversed the narrative of collin"s, as we have read, who discussed how privileged white groups set the standard and set up the immorality and sexually charged people of colour. Espiritu highlights how people of colour have used the sexualization of white girls as a strategy of resistance. Fields" ethnography of predominantly african american, low-income students in north carolina explores the racialized and gendered components of school-based sexual education.
