Document Summary

Can involve a process similar to reasoning & problem solving. Arriving at a perception can involve a process. Perception involves complex, & usually invisible, processes that do. It is necessary to go beyond the pattern of light & dark that a scene creates on the retina - the structure that lines the back of the eye & contains the receptors for seeing. Attempts to program computers to recognize objects have shown how difficult it is to program computers to perceive at a level comparable to humans. Even though computer programs may be able to identify some objects, they often make errors that a human would never make, such as calling a camera lens cover or the top of a teapot a tennis ball. Computer vision & the human face programs have been developed that can determine, just as well as humans can, whether two faces that are seen straight on are the same or different people.
