Murdoch, jr. (1962: studied distinction b/w stm and ltm by measuring a function called the serial position curve. Serial position curve measured by: presenting list of words to a group of subjects at a steady rate, at end of presentation, subjects write down all words they can remember, in any order, results plotted in a curve. Indicates % of subjects recalling each word vs. its position in the list. Subject begins recall immediately after hearing list of words. List is presented and subject repeats words out loud in 5-second intervals b/w words. Words at beginning of list are repeated more, so they are more likely to get into. Subject begins recall after counting backwards for 30 seconds.
