PSYC 271 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Apical Dendrite, Cranial Nerves, Subarachnoid Space
Document Summary
2 divisions: central nervous system (cns): located within the skull and the spine. Spinal cord (in spine: peripheral nervous system (pns): located outside of the skull and spine. Somatic nervous system (sns): interacts with external environment and composed of afferent nerves (carry sensory signals towards the cnsie from skin to brain) and efferent nerves that carry motor signals from the brain towards the skeletal muscles. Autonomic nervous system (ans): regulates the (cid:271)od(cid:455)"s i(cid:374)ter(cid:374)al e(cid:374)(cid:448)iro(cid:374)(cid:373)e(cid:374)t ie) fight or flight. Composed of afferent nerves that carry sensory signals from organs to cns and efferent nerves motor signals from cns to internal organs. Sympathetic nerves stimulate, organize, and mobilize energy resources in stressful situations. Sympa changes are indicative of psychological arousal: parasympathetic nerves: project from brain and sacral (lower back) region of spinal (cid:272)ord s(cid:455)(cid:374)apse (cid:374)ear target organs. Para changes are indicative of psychological relaxation.
