Describe the internet in terms of a networking infrastructure that provides services to distributed applications) Interconnection of hundreds and millions of computing devices: used to be only pcs, linux workstations, servers, and emails, now it had laptops, smartphones , tablets, tvs, gaming consoles, security systems, home electrical and more. All these devices connected to the internet are called hosts or end systems. End systems are connected together by a network of communcation links and packet. Sending segment data and add header bytes to each segment. Packets (packages: packets are later reassembled into original data, packet switch: takes a packet arrive from incoming communication links and forwards packet to one of outgoing communication links. Routers and link-layer switches : forward packets to destinations. Sequences of communication links and packet switches transverse by a packet from sending to receiving is known as a route or path. Packet-switched networks work similar to highways, roads, intersections: end systems access the internet through isps.
