Post-impressionism describes art after impressionist painting in the late 19c nearly all were influenced by impressionism. Two trends evolved: strong sense of formal structure on one hand and emotional content on the other. New tastes evolved for aestheticism art for its own sake and the elegance of form, reflected in the art. Based most of his work on parisian nightlife. Still life with apples (1875-1877) is a manifestation of his assertion that that the world can be reduced to a cone, a sphere, and a cylinder . Great bathers (1898-1905) - slant of the bamboo is mirrored by the slant of the back of the figure on the left.
