Glucose is made by plants through photosynthesis. Found as a component of a disaccharide or complex carb. Based on number of sugar molecules present. Complex = hundreds to thousands of molecules. Simple carbohydrates are commonly referred to as sugars . Simple form is found in the blood. Preferred source of energy for the brain. *galactose (not found alone in foods, binds with glucose to make lactose) Body produces this from the foods we eat. Fermented during production of beer and liquor. Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates (long chains of glucose molecules) Body cannot use starch so it breaks it down into glucose. Storage form of glucose in animals (liver and muscles) Very little exists in meat (after an animal is killed, most of the glycogen is broken down by the enzymes found in animal tissues) Forms support structures of leaves, stems, and plants. Dietary fibre: indigestible parts of plants that form the support structures of leaves, stems, and seeds (plant"s skeleton)
