Document Summary

Social determinants of health: an overview of the key issues and themes. Social determinants of health also determine the extent to which a person possesses the physical, social, and personal resources to identify and achieve personal aspirations, satisfy needs, and cope with the environment. Rather than improving the primary determinants of health the adverse living conditions people are subjected to activities focus on targeting the victims of these adverse living conditions for behaviour change. This is the case even though health behaviours are known to be rather less important determinants of health. The effect of all this is to add insult victim blaming to injury the experience of deprived living conditions (raphael, 2002). Mass media reinforces these understandings through its uncritical reporting of any and all studies of how a particular gene or behaviour either protects/form or credits some dire medical condition. (ex: sleeping more or less than 8 hours a night)
