Document Summary

A team exist when others perceive themselves to be a team. Infromal groups: all teams are groups but not many groups satisfy our defn of teams. Groups include ppl assembled together regardless of the reason. An informal group wouldn"t be called a team b/c they have little/no interdependence & no organizationally mandated purpose, they exist primarily for the benefit of the members. Human beings are social animals, our drive to bond is hardwired through evolutionary development. Social identity theory individuals identify themselves by their group affiliations, groups shape & reinforce our. They can accomplish tasks that can"t be achieved by individuals working alone, eg. coalitions (employees create a group to oppose organizational changes b/c they have more power as a collective than individuals who try to bring about change) We are comforted by the mere presence of other ppl & thus are motivated to be near them especially in stressful self-concept situations.
