The current status of the concept of environment individual. Nursing theories don"t have an explanation of environment accounting for: Nurses examine root causes of person"s health problems, but from epidemiological per- spective client and other individuals in community examined for causative agents. Environmental characteristics analyzed from individual or family speci c situations. Nursing practice hasn"t reached beyond the client into the social, political, and economic structures that produce behaviours that interfere with health i. e. class relationships, pow- er relations, ideologies like sexism, racism, ageism. In current state, environment is a rigid, static concept; contributes nothing substantive to nursing paradigm. Nurses don"t consider strategies for changing, adjusting, or altering environments: the person adjust, assimilate, or accommodate and nurses support them in the process. Nursing"s arena for intervention and action restricted to institutionally con ned settings: access to person"s of concern depends upon institutional relationships, those who"d bene t most don"t have access to institutions.
