Pain originates from the cns, pns or both. Nociceptors detect painful sensations in the periphery and then send info to the cns- can be directly stimulated by trauma or injury or by chemical mediators that are released from the site of tissue damage. Refered pain: originates from one location but felt at another site. Acute pain: short term and self limiting serving as a self protective purpose ( warns of actual or potential tissue damage. Older adults: altho pain is common xperience among them, it is not a normal process of aging- pain indicates disease or injury active listening is the route to understanding the underlying fears. Gender differences: women more likely to experience migraines with aura, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis and men more likely to experience cluster headaches, gout, coronary artery disease and duodenal ulvers. Culture differences: ask what the pain means to them, are there any treatments to be aware of.
