Document Summary

Define the types of interpersonal violence and health care professionals" responses to violence. Intimate partner violence encompasses a spousal violence and violence committed by current or former dating partners. Spousal abuse is physical or sexual violence, psychological violence, or financial abuse within current or former marital or common-law relationships, including same-sex spousal relationships. Behaviours used to dominate another person in the context of an intimate relationship may include physical or sexual assault and acts such as verbal abuse, imprisonment, humiliation, stalking, and denial of access to financial resources, shelter, or services. While men are more likely to be injured by strangers in a public or social venue, women are in greater danger of experiencing violence from intimate partners in their own homes. Women are also at greater risk of sexual violence. The main recommendation for health care providers has been to routinely screen for violence.
