Document Summary

Chapter 18: inflammation, tissue repair, and wound healing. Inflammation is a protective response intended to eliminate the initial cause of cell injury, remove the damaged tissue, and generate new tissue. There is an elaboration of inflammatory mediators and the movement of fluid and leukocytes from the blood to the extravascular tissues. Triggered by noxious stimuli (infection), has a rapid onset (minutes) and has a short duration (minutes to several days) Characterized by the exudation of of fluid and plasma components and emigration of leukocytes (neutrophils) Proliferation of blood vessels, tissue necrosis, and fibrosis. Single layer lining blood vessels to separate the intracellular & extracellular space. Produce anti-platelet and anti-thrombotic agents that maintain blood vessel patency and regulate blood flow. They contribute to the inflammatory response and the repair process. Cell fragments in blood that are involved in primary hemostasis. When activated, 300 proteins released including inflammatory mediators that increase vascular permeability and alter properties of the endothelial cells.
