Bipolar disorders are characterized by periods of mania, during which there are decreased need for food and sleep, racing thoughts, irritability, high distractibility can be followed by depressive episodes. Include major depressive disorders, persistent depressive disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, substance/medication induced depression. Average onset is 30 but if earlier than it is more likely that medication will be prescribed. Depression in older adults is seen as confusion and is often left untreated. Genetic factors play a role in schizophrenia. Can appear at any age by means of a depressed mood or loss of interest in activities.
