The scientific study of the mind, brain and behaviour. William james, described as founder of american psychology. A discipline that spans multiple levels of analysis. From molecules to brain structures on the low rungs (biological), to thoughts, feelings and emotions (psychological), and to social and cultural influences on the high rungs. Lower rungs are tied to the brain , higher rungs to the mind . The mind is just the brain in action. Human behaviour is hard to predict because the majority of actions are produced by many factors (multiply determined) Need to be skeptical of single-variable explanations of behaviour. Behaviours such as violence are caused by many factors rather than just one. Psychological influences are rarely independent of each other, makes it harder to pinpoint what cause/causes are operating. Individuals differ from each other in thinking, emotion, personality and behaviour.
