Most common kind of tumor in the brain arise from glial cells. Gliomas (two types: astrocytomas growth of astrocytes, do not grow very quickly and are rarely malignant, generally well encapsulate d. Damage comes from pressure/compression of surrounding tissue. Dangerous depending on the location: glioblastoma grow very quickly, highly malignant, tend to infiltrate the surrounding tissue. Medulloblastoma (not common) highly malignant, infiltrating tumortends to form are the cerebellum and brainstem (breathing and vegetative functions) prognosis is poor. Meningiomas grow out of the dura matter: well encapsulated pressure causes damage. Secondary tumors that form from migrated tumor tissue. Simple metastatic tumors forms only at one site. Multiple metastatic tumors spreading from the lungs to the cns. Vary widely, depends on the size and location of the tumor: language, epilepsy, motor, numbness, vision problems. When blood supply to the brain is interrupted, can be sudden or gradual, complete or relative, permanent or transient.
