PSY 605 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Phantom Limb, Nociception, Posterior Grey Column
Document Summary
Due to its high prevalence, pain represents a serious public health concern. Pain is often classified as acute or chronic. Acute pain- refers to recent ongoing tissue damage (i. e. injury) Chronic pain- refers to pain that persists beyond the normal expected healing period. Chronic pain is defined as pain that has lasted for at least 3-6 months. Pain is often thought of as a sensation which is incorrect (pain is not a sensation) Sensation- a process by which stimulation od a sensory receptor gives rise to neural impulses that result from an experience outside the body. Nociception- refers to the processing of stimuli associated with the stimulation of nociceptors (specific receptors for pain) and has the potential of being experienced as pain. Nociception frequently (but not always) leads to the experience of pain. Believed that tissue damage results in pain being experiences in the same way as a pull on a string causes the bell to ring.
