Chapter 8: interpersonal stress: the stress of divorce. Divorce is a legal dissolution of the partnership. Up to of 1st marriages end in divorce & 2nd marriages have an even greater likelihood. Divorce is usually stressful but for some it presents positive consequences, eg. relief, personal growth leading to self-confidence & autonomy, etc. Amato lists stressors that make adjustment to divorce more difficult: child custody, ongoing conflicts, loss of financial resources (more likely to affect women especially housewives), disruption of emotional & social support networks. Moderators that serve as protective factors against divorce stress: individual personal resources (coping skills, social skills, self-efficacy), interpersonal resources (building new social support networks), structural resources (employment, financial/community resources: social support, social strain & health. *social support refers to the social interactions embedded w/in a network of social relationships that provide a person w/ potential access to/receipt of actual or perceived resources from others who are perceived as caring.
