College of education accepted the subcommittee of multicultural teacher education"s proposal of a course in multicultural education for pre-service teachers with a focus on aboriginal culture. The proposal reflected the changing nature of the responsibilities of teachers and teacher educators in a country in which multiculturalism and human rights have become the cornerstone of canadian citizenship . Since 1988, the course has been a requirement to pass the pre-service education program. The course is taught by aboriginals and whites. The research participants were interviewed following the course. Many of the students were of non-anglo european ancestry. Their discursive practices for the processes they use to perform their subject identities in spite of compulsory multicultural education are being examined.
